The pleasant effects of essential oils was known to mankind many thousand years ago, for instance in the ancient Egypt.
Embalming of the dead by means of different herbs or cosmetic applications (Cleopatra!) shall be taken as an example.
Every ancient civilisation, in China, Central America, Mesopotamia or India, used incenses, balms, herbs and oils for their rituals. Some actions and applications are still part of shaman rites today (e.g. North America, Africa, Pacifics, Australia etc.) Herbs were used also in everyday life, for the preservation of food or as a treatment of illnesses. In the later centuries, the knowledge was carried by trade roads to the ancient greeks and romans. In the Middle ages great medic Avicenna and nun Hildegard of Bingen wrote about herbs as medical application.
